Must-Try Foods In Hashima Island (Nagasaki) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Hashima Island, Nagasaki, Japan

Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island), does not have a rich food history to speak of due to its unique historical context. It was once a densely populated coal mining facility until it was abandoned in the 1970s. During its peak, miners and their families lived on the island, and their diet would have consisted primarily of Japanese staples, which would have been brought in from the mainland since the island itself is not suitable for agriculture or fishing. Any traditional food associated with the island would be more reflective of the broader Nagasaki region's cuisine.
