Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Hayravank Monastery is a 9th-century Armenian monastic complex situated on a rocky promontory on the southwestern shores of Lake Sevan in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia. This historic site offers a fascinating glimpse into the medieval Armenian architecture and religious history. The complex consists of a church, chapel, gavit (a type of narthex), and various khachkars (traditional Armenian cross-stones). The monastery’s architecture is characterized by its simplicity and use of local basalt stone, which gives the structures a distinctive dark hue that contrasts beautifully with the azure waters of Lake Sevan. Visitors can explore the ancient prayer halls, examine the intricate stone carvings, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this secluded site. Moreover, Hayravank is a vantage point offering breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Sevan, which is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. The monastery's serene location, combined with its historical significance and architectural beauty, makes it a must-visit destination for travelers interested in Armenia's rich cultural heritage.

Not big or small curch of Hayravank was really good experience.
Really nice church, unique for Sevan lakes region (Gegharkunik’s style), Also there is a astonishing view to Lake Sevan. Near Hayravank you can stop in Gavar city, eat Pakhlava or Qyuvta there.

At last, some peace and quiet!
This monastery is much nicer than Sevenavank. Almost no others when we were there and almost as good views.
