Getting to Hualien, Taiwan

Traveling to Hualien, which is located on the east coast of Taiwan, can be an exciting journey filled with stunning natural scenery and cultural experiences. Below are the major ways to reach the city:

By Train

From Taipei: The most scenic and popular method to get to Hualien from Taiwan's capital city, Taipei, is by train. The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) offers express, semi-express, and local trains to Hualien. The fastest trains are the Taroko Express and the Puyuma Express, which can take about 2 to 2.5 hours, while other express trains might take up to 3 hours.

By Air

From Taipei and Other Cities: For those looking for a quicker option, domestic flights operate from Taipei Songshan Airport to Hualien Airport, and the flight takes approximately 50 minutes. Additionally, there are occasional flights from other cities like Taichung and Kaohsiung, depending on the season.

By Bus

Travelling by bus is another option, though less common than train due to longer travel times. Buses can be boarded from Taipei, Taichung, or other major cities around Taiwan, and the journey will take several hours, depending on the point of origin.

By Car or Motorcycle

Renting a car or motorcycle provides the freedom to explore at your own pace and take in the picturesque East Coast Highway. However, this is usually recommended for those familiar with Taiwan's driving conditions and who possess a valid international driver's license.

By Private Transfer or Tour

For convenience and comfort, visitors may opt for a private transfer or join a guided tour that includes transportation to Hualien. This can be arranged through travel agencies or hotels throughout Taiwan.

Travel Tips

• Reserve train tickets in advance, especially on weekends and holidays, as seats can sell out quickly.
• Check the weather forecast for road conditions if you're driving, as the coastal highway can be affected by rain and landslides.
• Consider travel insurance that covers domestic flights as they can often be subject to weather-related cancellations.
