Jambukeswarar Temple, located in Thiruvanaikaval, is one of the five major Shiva Temples of Tamil Nadu, and represents the element of water. It's part of the 'Panchabhoota Stalams', revered by the Tamil Saivites. Built by the Chola dynasty around 1800 years ago, the temple showcases an architectural style that includes intricately carved pillars, and a sanctum around a natural spring. Its deity, Jambukeswarar (Shiva), is worshipped along with the Goddess Akilandeswari, a form of Parvati. The temple complex is filled with inscriptions from various periods, and its Dravidian architecture is evidenced by the gopuram adorned with colorful statues, vast courtyards, and decorative halls. The temple has been patronized by both ancient and medieval rulers, who have contributed to its expansion and renovation over time.
