The Kallanai Dam, also known as the Grand Anicut, is a historic dam built on the Kaveri River in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Located around 15 kilometers from Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), this ancient water-regulatory structure is one of the oldest in the world that's still in use. Constructed during the reign of the Chola king Karikalan around the 2nd century AD, the Kallanai is an engineering marvel that has stood the test of time. The purpose of the dam was to divert the river to the delta districts thereby irrigating the farmlands and boosting agriculture. It stretches over 329 meters and is made of unhewn stone. The structure has been modified slightly by the British during their rule to enhance its capacity. It is also a popular tourist spot, offering insights into ancient Tamil engineering skills, and providing a serene ambiance for visitors to enjoy the scenic beauty and tranquil waters. The architectural prowess and historical significance make it an important heritage site in India.
