Jatinga Village Tourism

Jatinga is a small village located in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, India, known for the phenomenon of bird 'suicides'. Surrounded by serene hills and picturesque vistas, it falls under the greater region of Haflong, which is the only hill station in Assam. The village is inhabited primarily by the Khasi-Pnar tribal community. Jatinga is famous for its orange orchards and lush greenery, offering a peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts. However, it's the mysterious bird phenomenon that happens during the late monsoon months for which Jatinga is most noted. During foggy and misty nights, migratory and local birds are inexplicably attracted to the village lights and tend to crash onto buildings and trees, resulting in their death. While it has been a subject of interest for many ornithologists, the exact reason behind this behavior remains a matter of research and speculation. The phenomenon primarily occurs on a specific 1.5 km stretch of the village and has made Jatinga a place of both tragic curiosity and a unique natural spectacle.
