Food History of Karnaphuli River, Chittagong, Bangladesh

The Karnaphuli River has been at the heart of Chittagong for centuries, acting as a vital channel for trade and cultural exchange. The food culture in Chittagong, and by extension along the Karnaphuli River, showcases a blend of Bengali cuisine with Southeast Asian, Arakanese (from modern-day Myanmar), and tribal influences. Due to its proximity to the sea and the river itself, the food here has a strong emphasis on fresh fish and seafood, while the fertile lands around contribute to a variety of fruits and vegetables.

The riverine communities have developed their style of cooking, often using bamboo shoots, lentils, and leafy greens in their dishes. While beef and chicken are common in Bangladeshi cuisine, in the context of the Karnaphuli River area, other types of meats such as chicken, goat, and fish are predominantly consumed due to religious and cultural preferences.
