Kawah Putih, which means 'White Crater,' is a striking crater lake and tourist spot located in a volcanic crater about 50 km south of Bandung in West Java, Indonesia. Situated at approximately 2,430 meters above sea level, the lake is known for its surreal turquoise coloration, which is a result of hydrothermal activity and the high sulfur content in the lake water. Surrounded by the lush greenery of Patuha Mount, the area offers a cool and misty atmospheric condition due primarily to the high altitude. The distinct and vividly colored waters varying from bluish to whitish green, depending on the concentration of sulfur and the temperature, are a unique natural phenomenon. A visit to Kawah Putih also includes exploring the surrounding area, which is dotted with tea plantations and strawberry farms, making for a scenic and refreshing journey. Due to its sulfuric nature, the area around the lake emits a strong sulfuric smell, and visitors are advised not to stay for prolonged periods to avoid exposure to the gas emissions. The site is accessible to visitors via a short hike or drive from the entrance where shuttle services are often available.
