Best Time To Visit Koh Paen Island (Kampong Cham) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Koh Paen Island, Kampong Cham, Cambodia

The ideal period to explore Koh Paen Island in Kampong Cham is during the dry season, which stretches from November to April. During this window, the Mekong River's water levels recede, allowing for easy access to the island and its quaint bamboo bridge, a seasonal structure rebuilt annually. The moderate temperatures and minimal rainfall create optimal conditions for various outdoor activities, including cycling, walking, and engaging with the local community. Visitors will enjoy comfortable travel across the island's landscapes, as the dry season boasts clear skies and is characterized by Cambodian festivals such as Bon Om Touk (Water Festival) in November and Khmer New Year in April, providing a peek into the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

In contrast, May to October marks the monsoon season in Cambodia, which can see Koh Paen inundated by the swelling Mekong, making access more challenging. While this season paints the island in lush green hues, it's also punctuated by heavy downpours and potentially impassable rural paths, making some areas difficult to reach. For those who don't mind the rains and are looking for a more tranquil experience, this time can be suitable, although it's advisable for travelers to be prepared for changes in accessibility. The rainy season also offers a unique perspective of local life as residents adapt to the increased water levels, relying on boats for transportation.
