Best Time To Visit Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo, is known for its bustling markets, modern boardwalk, beaches, and waterfront. The best time to visit Kota Kinabalu is typically during the dry season which falls between January and April. During these months, visitors can enjoy warm, pleasant weather ideal for exploring the city and engaging in outdoor activities. The humidity is lower and the skies are generally clearer, providing a great opportunity for hiking and sightseeing, especially for those looking to climb Mount Kinabalu or visit the nearby islands within Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. Moreover, the Chinese New Year period often falls within these months, presenting an exciting opportunity to experience the local cultural celebrations.

April is particularly noteworthy as it marks the driest month, thereby reducing the likelihood of rain interrupting plans. However, if you're interested in water activities such as scuba diving or snorkeling, visiting Kota Kinabalu from May to August can also be favorable as these months offer good visibility underwater despite being slightly wetter. Additionally, the rainy season, which starts from November to February, should generally be avoided if you prefer not to deal with heavier rainfall. However, if you don't mind the occasional downpour, this period may have the advantage of fewer tourists and potentially reduced prices for accommodations and tours.
