Kumayri Historic District is the oldest part of Gyumri, the second-largest city in Armenia. Characterized by its historic buildings, it reflects the traditional urban Armenian architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the buildings were constructed with the local reddish-black tufa stone, which has become a hallmark of the area. The district survived a devastating earthquake in 1988, preserving a significant part of Gyumri's cultural heritage. It encompasses several churches, old houses with charming courtyards, and cobblestone streets that tell stories of the past. Noteworthy structures within the district include the Church of the Holy Saviour, the Church of the Seven Wounds of Saint Mary, and numerous traditional craftsmen’s shops. Kumayri Historic District serves as a testament to the resilience of Gyumri and its people, capturing the historical spirit of a city that played a crucial role in the region's trade, culture, and social life. Restoration efforts have been ongoing to rehabilitate the district and maintain its authentic character, thereby preserving its architectural gems for future generations.
