Type of destination: City
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 days
Gyumri, the second-largest city in Armenia, is situated in the Shirak Province in the northwestern part of the country. This city boasts a rich history and culture, having been inhabited since ancient times. It served as one of the important centers of trade and crafts in historical Armenia, a heritage that still echoes in its architecture and cultural institutions. Gyumri is renowned for its unique style of Armenian architecture, characterized by the extensive use of the rich black tuff stone that gives many of the city's buildings a distinctive appearance. Tragically, the city was the epicenter of the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake, which caused immense destruction and loss of life. Since then, Gyumri has been on a path of rebuilding and renewal, with many of its historical structures restored or under renovation. Visitors to Gyumri will find a vibrant cultural scene, with numerous museums, theaters, and galleries, as well as a growing number of cafes and restaurants that cater to a mix of traditional Armenian flavors and international cuisine. The city is also known for its humor and the warm hospitality of its residents.
