Sev Berd, also known as the Black Fortress, is a historical site located on the outskirts of Gyumri, the second-largest city in Armenia. The name 'Black Fortress' is derived from the dark basalt stone used in its construction. Built by the Russians in the 1830s during the era of the Russian Empire's expansion into Eastern Anatolia, it served as a military stronghold. The fortress reflects the architecture of its time, designed to assert Russian power over the region. Despite its martial origins, Sev Berd is now a serene and poignant landmark set against the backdrop of Gyumri's urban life. Over the years, this architectural marvel has witnessed significant historical events, including the devastating earthquake that hit Gyumri in 1988. Today, the fortress remains mostly in ruins but continues to be an important cultural and historical symbol for the people of Armenia. It has become a popular spot for tourists, photographers, and history enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the past and panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes of Shirak Province.
