Ideal visit duration: 30 minutes to 1 hour
The Orthodox Church of the Holy Mother of God, also known as the Russian Orthodox Church, is situated in Gyumri, the second-largest city in Armenia. Built in the 19th century, specifically in 1848-1851, during the period when the city was part of the Russian Empire, the church exemplifies traditional Russian ecclesiastical architecture with its distinctive style and iconic onion-shaped domes. It was erected to serve the Russian military garrison stationed in Gyumri, then known as Alexandropol. The church is constructed of black and orange tuff stone, which are commonly used materials in Armenian architecture. Surviving several earthquakes, the most devastating one in 1988, it stands as a testament to the city's rich history and resilience. The church was restored after the earthquake and reconsecrated in 2004. It is an active religious site where services are conducted in the Russian Orthodox tradition. The church grounds also feature a memorial commemorating the soldiers who died in World War II and are a place of reflection and remembrance for the citizens of Gyumri and its visitors.

An OK church.
This is an OK orthodox church with a rather underwhelming interior but a lovely exterior, especially the monastery area.

Nice Orthodox church
I liked the green interior. The church is very ornate, but to me that distracts from having an experience with a living God.

Nice church
This church was very nice. It’s seemed Russian to me. It was dark wood and incense was burning. It had great atmosphere. And felt religious. A real nice one.
