How To Reach Lake Chuzenji

Lake Chuzenji (Chūzenjiko) is a scenic lake in the mountainous region of Nikko National Park, Tochigi Prefecture. It's located at the foot of Mount Nantai, Nikko's sacred volcano. Reaching Lake Chuzenji involves several steps, depending on your starting point.

From Tokyo to Nikko:

By Train:

  • Take the Tohoku Shinkansen (Bullet Train) from Tokyo Station to Utsunomiya Station.
  • Transfer to the JR Nikko Line and get off at Nikko Station.

By Tobu Railway:

  • Direct limited express trains from Asakusa Station to Tobu-Nikko Station are available.
  • This is often the preferred route for those with the All Nikko Pass.

From Nikko to Lake Chuzenji:

Once you are in Nikko, you have a couple of options to reach Lake Chuzenji:

By Bus:

  • From JR Nikko Station or Tobu-Nikko Station, take a Tobu bus bound for Chuzenjiko Onsen or Yumoto Onsen.
  • The ride takes about 45-50 minutes and offers a picturesque journey up the Irohazaka Winding Road.
  • Note that traffic can be heavy, especially during autumn leaf season.

By Car:

  • Car rentals are available in Nikko.
  • Driving gives you the flexibility to stop along the way at scenic spots.
  • Be prepared for the mountain roads, which are steep and winding.

Additional Tips:

  • Check bus schedules in advance, as they can be less frequent off-season.
  • During winter, the road to Lake Chuzenji can sometimes be closed due to snow.
  • Purchasing a Nikko Pass can be cost-effective if you plan on visiting multiple attractions in the area.
