Ledo and Margherita are two small towns situated in the Tinsukia district of the north-eastern Indian state of Assam. These towns are part of the historic Stilwell Road, also known as the Ledo Road, which was built during World War II to support the Allied Forces. They are noted for their beautiful landscapes filled with tea gardens, dense tropical forests, and diverse wildlife. Margherita, often termed as the Coal Queen of Assam, has a long history of coal mining. It hosts India’s oldest operational coal mines and has been an industrial hub since the British era. The town is named after the Italian queen Margherita of Savoy. Ledo, on the other hand, serves as the easternmost frontier of the Indian Railways and is the starting point of the Stilwell Road. These towns provide a mix of beautiful natural sceneries and an intriguing colonial and war history, appealing to nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Ledo is also the gateway to the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its rich biodiversity.
