The Jeita Grotto, located in the Nahr al-Kalb valley within the locality of Jeita, 18 kilometers north of the Lebanese capital Beirut, is a compound of two separate, but interconnected, karstic limestone caves that span an overall length of nearly 9 kilometers. The Lower Grotto is particularly renowned for its extraordinary features, which can be explored via boat due to the underground river that flows through it.
Discovered in 1836 by Reverend William Thomson, the Jeita Grotto was opened to the public in 1958 and quickly became a prominent tourist attraction in Lebanon.
