Best Time To Visit Lukung (Pangong Lake) In 2026 - 2027

Visit Lukung, Pangong Tso in Ladakh, India

The small, scenic village of Lukung is a popular starting point for visits to the breathtaking Pangong Tso in Ladakh. The best time to plan a trip to this area is during the summer months, from June to September. During this period, the weather is relatively warm and pleasant, with daytime temperatures averaging around 15-20°C. These months provide a conducive environment for tourists to explore the crystal-clear blue waters of the lake and enjoy the stark beauty of the surrounding landscape. The access road to Pangong Tso from Leh is typically clear of snow, making it easier for visitors to travel by car or motorbike.

It is important to note that the region is at a very high altitude, over 4,350 meters, and acclimatization is necessary to avoid altitude sickness. As the tourist season peaks, accommodations such as tents and homestays may get booked rapidly, so it is advisable to make reservations in advance. Additionally, permit requirements for visiting this protected border area may change, so tourists should check the current regulations before planning their trip. Outside of the summer months, the area often becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall, with temperatures dropping well below freezing, and the lake itself freezing over completely in winter.
