Best Time to Visit Marmot Point, Pangong Tso, Ladakh

The high-altitude desert region of Ladakh in India is home to the serene beauty of Pangong Tso and the delightful presence of Himalayan marmots, especially at what's fondly called Marmot Point. The ideal time to visit Marmot Point is during the short summer season, which spans from late May to September. During these months, the weather at Pangong Tso is relatively mild, with daytime temperatures hovering around 12-20°C, making it congenial for tourists to engage in outdoor activities and wildlife watching. The access roads to Pangong Tso, including the iconic Chang La Pass, are typically clear of snow, ensuring a smooth journey to Marmot Point. It's also breeding time for marmots, so they are more active and visible above ground.

Visitors are advised to avoid the winter months from November to early May as the region becomes incredibly cold with temperatures plummeting to sub-zero levels. In winters, the lake freezes completely and road accessibility can be hampered due to heavy snowfall, though it offers a completely different kind of icy beauty for the few intrepid souls who can brave the harsh climate. By planning your visit during the peak summer months, you also get the chance to witness the vibrant hues of the lake, when the waters display a stunning array of blues. Also, keep in mind that due to the sensitive border location, visitors require Inner Line Permits to visit Pangong Tso, which can be obtained from the District Magistrate's office in Leh.
