The Martand Sun Temple is a significant archaeological site located near the town of Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It sits atop a plateau with a commanding view of the Kashmir Valley. Built during the 8th century CE, the temple is dedicated to the Hindu sun god Surya and is an exemplary specimen of early medieval Kashmiri architecture, integrating the Gandharan, Gupta, Chinese, Roman, Syrian-Byzantine, and Greek forms. It is the largest temple complex in the Kashmir Valley and reflects the grandeur of the kingdom of Lalitaditya Muktapida, the most powerful ruler of the Karkota Dynasty. The temple complex is now in ruins due to the passage of time and historical invasions, particularly by Sikandar Butshikan in the early 15th century, who is believed to have orchestrated its destruction. Despite this, the site's impressive colonnaded courtyard and the central shrine evoke a sense of awe and give insight into the region's past glory. The Martand Sun Temple is held in great reverence for its architectural brilliance and is a cherished site for both local denizens and historians.
