Type of destination: Ski Resort
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 days
The Masikryong Ski Resort is located in the Kangwon Province near Wonsan, North Korea. Nestled amid the Taehwa Mountains, it was opened in 2013 as North Korea's attempt to boost tourism and show off the nation’s capacity to build recreational facilities. The resort spans over 1,400 hectares and features a luxury hotel, ski school, ice skating rink, and swimming pool. It boasts 10 slopes designed to cater to various skill levels, with the longest run being about 5 kilometers. Notably, the resort is equipped with a gondola imported from Austria. Due to its unique location and the political situation surrounding North Korea, Masikryong offers a very different experience compared to typical ski destinations. Visitors can expect to see North Korean culture closely, often accompanied by local guides. However, access might require coordination through authorized tours as independent travel is restricted. The infrastructure and amenities at Masikryong are surprisingly modern, part of an initiative to develop local tourism and improve economic conditions. Its presence in an isolated country adds a layer of novelty for international visitors.
