Milan Cathedral, also known as the Duomo di Milano, is not only the city's most iconic landmark but also famous for its splendid rooftop with Gothic spires that offer breathtaking views of Milan. To visit the rooftop, you have several options:
Piazza del Duomo, Milano, Italy
The easiest way to reach the Milan Cathedral is by taking the Metro. You can use Line 1 (Red) or Line 3 (Yellow), and alight at the Duomo station which is right beside the Cathedral.
Alternatively, you can take the tram. Routes 12, 24, and 27 stop at the Duomo.
Buses 54, 60, 65, 73, and 77 also stop nearby. Look for stops at Via Mazzini or Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, which are within walking distance to the Cathedral.
If you're staying in central Milan, walking might be the best option. The Cathedral is located in the heart of the city and is easily accessible from many central locations.
If you choose to drive, keep in mind that the area around the Duomo is a traffic-restricted zone (ZTL). Parking can be challenging and it's recommended to park outside of the ZTL and use public transport to reach the Cathedral.
To access the rooftop, you can buy tickets at the Cathedral's ticket office or online to avoid queues. There are two options for reaching the top:
The rooftop is accessible daily. Hours may vary by season, so it's important to check the official website or contact the Duomo’s information desk for the most up-to-date schedule before your visit.
- Buy tickets in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
- Check the weather forecast before your visit as the rooftop can be slippery when wet, and it may be closed during inclement weather.
- Wear comfortable shoes as the rooftop has uneven surfaces.
- Consider visiting during the golden hours for extraordinary photo opportunities – sunrise or sunset times offer spectacular lighting.
