The Milk Grotto, also known as Magharet Sitti Mariam or Grotto of the Lady Mary, is an ancient site located in Bethlehem, Israel. This serene chapel is carved out of soft white rock and holds great significance for Christians, Muslims, and others. According to tradition, the grotto is the place where the Holy Family found refuge during the Slaughter of the Innocents, before they could flee to Egypt. Legend has it that while Mary was nursing Jesus here, a drop of her milk fell to the ground, turning the cave's rock white. Many believe that the powdered white rock from the grotto can enhance fertility. The Grotto is situated only a few minutes' walk from the Church of the Nativity, which is the reputed birthplace of Jesus. The chapel's interior is adorned with representations of the Nativity and the Flight into Egypt, and it emits a sense of peaceful sanctity. The Milk Grotto is not only a place of worship but is also a popular pilgrimage site, frequented by visitors who come to soak in its tranquil atmosphere and reflect on its historical and spiritual heritage.
