The Mulbekh Chamba, or Maitreya Buddha statue, is a revered monument located in Mulbekh, a village in the Kargil district of Ladakh, in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated at an altitude of about 3,304 meters along the National Highway 1 between Kargil and Leh, the statue is carved out of a single rock and dates back to the 8th century. It is an exquisite example of early Tibetan Buddhist art in the Himalayas. The sculpture represents Maitreya, the future Buddha in Buddhist eschatology, who is believed to arrive on earth from Tushita Heaven. The statue is about 9 meters tall and displays a blend of Gandhara and Persian art styles. Historically, it signifies the period when Buddhism was becoming the dominant faith in the region. Mulbekh Chamba stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and has become an important stopover for tourists traveling along the Srinagar-Leh highway. It provides a spectacular scenic beauty and a sense of spirituality amid the rugged terrains.
