Mulbekh Gompa, also known as Mulbekh Monastery, is a prominent gompa or Buddhist monastery in the Kargil district of Ladakh, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated at an altitude of 3,304 meters on the Srinagar-Leh highway, this gompa is an important stopover for travelers heading towards Leh or Kargil. The monastery comprises two gompas, one Drukpa (Buddhist sect) and another Gelugpa (more commonly known as the Yellow Hat sect). What makes Mulbekh Gompa famous is the striking 9-meter-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, carved into the rock face around 7th-8th century CE. The edifice is believed to symbolize the future Buddha in Tibetan Buddhist belief. The monastery houses ancient inscriptions and frescoes that are of significant historical and religious importance. Mulbekh Gompa is set against a backdrop of stark hills and snow-capped peaks, offering breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere for meditation and spiritual reflection. Visitors come not only for religious interest but also to enjoy the peaceful environment and the insight into Tibetan Buddhist culture that this ancient monument provides.
