Reaching Murghab Bazaar by Road

  • From Dushanbe: The journey from Dushanbe to Murghab is approximately 600 km and can take up to 16-20 hours. You can hire a 4x4 vehicle or join a shared taxi. The trip is often split into two days, with a possible overnight stay in Khorog.
  • From Osh, Kyrgyzstan: If traveling from Osh, the trip is about 420 km and you can expect a 7-10 hour journey through the Pamir Highway, considered the second highest international highway in the world. Shared taxis and rented vehicles with drivers are common options.
  • From Khorog: If you're already in the Pamir region, then Khorog to Murghab is a 300 km journey that typically takes around 8 hours. Travelers can opt for shared taxis or hired vehicles.

Note: Due to the high altitude and rugged terrain, roads may be closed seasonally or due to adverse weather conditions. Always check the latest travel advisories and road conditions before setting out on your journey.

By Air

While Murghab does not have an operational airport, the nearest airport is in Khorog. However, flights to Khorog are infrequent and can be unreliable due to weather conditions. Most travelers opt for overland travel to reach Murghab.

Border Crossings

If you are coming from Kyrgyzstan through the border at Kyzyl-Art Pass, ensure you have all the necessary visas and travel permits for Tajikistan. The border area is often open only during daylight hours, so plan your journey accordingly.

Visa Information

Most visitors will require a visa to enter Tajikistan. Additionally, traveling in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, where Murghab is located, requires a Gorno-Badakhshan permit (GBAO). You can apply for these documents at Tajik embassies or online through the E-visa system.
