Mutrah Souq (Muscat) History

A Glimpse into the Heart of Muscat: Mutrah Souq

The history of tourism in Muscat's Mutrah Souq is as vibrant and textured as the fabric sold within its bustling alleyways. Known as Al Dhalam (Darkness in Arabic) Souq, it is one of the oldest marketplaces in the Arab world. Its history dates back to the age of sail, where Muscat was a prime trading port, connecting the East and the West.

The Birthplace of Trade and Culture

For centuries, Mutrah Souq has been a hub of commercial activity. Merchants from far and wide would sail to Mutrah, bringing with them a plethora of goods such as spices, gold, and textiles. In turn, these traders took back dates, fish, and Omani frankincense known across the globe for its superior quality. This trade led to the cultural and economic prosperity of the region and laid the foundations for tourism in Muscat.
