Best Time to Visit Old Town (Altstadt), Cologne, Germany

The prime time to visit the Old Town (Altstadt) of Cologne is during the spring and fall, specifically between April and June, and September to October. These months offer mild weather, with temperatures comfortable for walking around the charming cobbled streets and exploring the historic sites. Spring in Cologne brings the city to life with blossoming flowers and plenty of outdoor activities, whereas autumn will captivate visitors with its warm colors and fewer tourists. During this period, visitors can enjoy the outdoors comfortably, making it ideal for leisurely exploring the many breweries, traditional shops, and historic attractions such as the Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) and the ancient Roman ruins sprinkled throughout the Old Town.

Moreover, the Christmas season is also a wonderful time to visit, particularly if you're interested in experiencing the famous Christmas markets that Cologne offers. From late November to December, the Old Town transforms into a festive wonderland, adorned with twinkling lights and holiday decorations. The Cologne Christmas Market, located in front of the striking Cologne Cathedral, is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe. However, be prepared for colder temperatures and larger crowds during this time. Visitors coming in winter should pack warm clothes and be ready to enjoy the festive atmosphere with a cup of hot Glühwein in hand, a traditional German mulled wine served during the holiday season.
