Best Time To Visit Pangong Lake (Ladakh) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Pangong Tso in Ladakh

The most favorable time to visit Pangong Tso, one of the most picturesque high-altitude lakes in Ladakh, is during the summer months, which span from May to September. During this time, the weather conditions are relatively warm with daylight temperatures ranging between 5°C to 15°C, making it an ideal period for tourists to explore the beauty of the lake and surrounding landscape. The lake is completely thawed, displaying its signature deep blue waters contrasted against the stark backdrop of rugged mountains. Accessibility is also at its best, with most roads clear of snow and the famous Chang La pass open for travelers.

Traveling to Pangong Tso outside of these months can be quite challenging due to the freezing temperatures and the potential closure of the passes, especially during the winter season from November to February, when the lake is completely frozen and temperatures can drop to -20°C. Despite the harsh conditions, winter visits offer a unique experience with the possibility of walking on the frozen surface of the lake and witnessing the stark white beauty of the surrounding snow-covered landscape. However, it's essential for visitors to be adequately prepared for extreme weather and to confirm accessibility and accommodations as many facilities close during the off-season.
