There is no direct airport in Panjakent. The nearest airport is Dushanbe International Airport. Once you've landed in Dushanbe, you can either rent a car or take a domestic flight to Khujand and further take a taxi or a shared minibus (marshrutka) to Panjakent.
From Dushanbe: The most direct route from Dushanbe involves a long drive (approximately 5-7 hours) over the Anzob pass to reach Panjakent. This can be done in a private car, taxi, or by marshrutka.
From Khujand: Travelers coming from Khujand can hire a taxi or take a marshrutka for the journey which will take around 4-6 hours depending on the road conditions and traffic.
Rail connections are not available directly to Panjakent. However, one could travel by train to Khujand or Dushanbe and then continue by road as described above.
If coming from Samarkand, Uzbekistan, cross the border at Jartepa. Upon crossing, you can find taxis or marshrutkas to take you directly to Panjakent. This border crossing is the closest, and after crossing, the time to reach Panjakent Bazaar is relatively short.
Foreign nationals require a visa to enter Tajikistan. Ensure that you apply for your visa well in advance and also check for any transit visa requirements if you are traveling from or via other countries.
Once in Panjakent, local transportation options include taxis, buses, and bicycles. For the most authentic experience, you can opt to explore the Bazaar on foot, as it gives you the best opportunity to interact with local vendors and experience the vibrant culture up-close.
