Type of destination: Botanical Garden
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, located in the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka, is a spectacular expanse of natural beauty and an eminent botanical haven, sprawling across 147 acres. Dating back to the 14th century, with its origins as a royal garden, it became a botanical garden in 1821. Renowned for its collection of orchids, the gardens are home to more than 4000 species of plants, including spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees. The enchanting avenue of Royal Palms, the serene Mahaweli River flowing through its periphery, and the Giant Bamboo of Burma, capable of growing to enormous heights, are some of its key features. The suspension bridge, Javan fig tree, and the bat colony are other notable attractions. Peradeniya's significant role in botanical research and plant conservation, coupled with its stunning landscape designed for leisurely strolls, picnics, and exploration, make it an essential stop for nature lovers and a priceless gem of Kandy.
