Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, often spelled as Udawattakele, is a historic forest reserve situated on a hill-ridge in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is 104 hectares large and has been a sanctuary since 1856 when it was designated as such by the British. The sanctuary is an important bio-reserve for the city of Kandy and is home to a variety of plant and animal species. The forest, which was originally a pleasure garden for the Kandyan kings, is thick with vegetation and is considered a vital green belt that provides a haven for wildlife, including birds, reptiles, insects, and mammals. A number of Buddhist meditation hermitages are situated within the forest, adding to its spiritual significance. The sanctuary features well-maintained paths and walkways, which lead through dense forest and open onto small clearings and waterways, offering a refreshing contrast to the busy city. It serves as a fantastic spot for bird-watching, leisure walks, and for enjoying the serenity of nature. Numerous endemic species can be found here, making it a popular spot for eco-tourists and nature enthusiasts.
