The Royal Palace of Kandy, also known as the 'Palace of the Tooth Relic,' is a historic building located in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This palace complex dates back to the 14th century and was the residence of the Sinhalese monarchs who ruled over the Kingdom of Kandy until it fell to British colonial forces in 1815. The well-preserved structure represents the culmination of Kandyan architecture with its wood carvings, traditional motifs, and well-designed gardens, known as the Wales Park. The most significant feature of the palace is the 'Temple of the Tooth Relic' (Sri Dalada Maligawa), which houses the sacred tooth relic of Buddha, an object of veneration for Buddhists worldwide. Today, the palace and temple are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and serve as a major tourist attraction, showcasing Kandy's rich history and cultural importance. The annual Esala Perahera, a grand festival featuring traditional dance, music, and elephants dressed in ornate garments, highlights the palace's historical significance and draws visitors from around the globe.
