The History of Tourism at Preston Park and Preston Manor in Brighton

Brighton, a vibrant city on the south coast of England, is renowned for its eclectic culture and historical landmarks, with Preston Park and Preston Manor standing as quintessential examples.

Preston Park

Preston Park, the largest urban park in the city, has been a staple for relaxation and leisure since it was officially opened to the public in 1884. Originally part of the prestigious Stanford estate, it was purchased by Brighton Corporation for the burgeoning community's enjoyment. The park's rolling expanses, sports facilities, and the famed Preston Park Rockery, the largest municipal rock garden in Britain, have long attracted visitors and locals alike.

In terms of tourism, Preston Park has been pivotal in hosting events that draw regional and international attendees. One notable event is the Brighton Pride Festival, which takes place annually and is one of the largest LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations in the UK. The park also hosts family-friendly events such as circuses, fun fairs, and firework displays, progressively making it an integral part of Brighton's tourism offerings.

Preston Manor

Adjacent to Preston Park is Preston Manor, a charming historic house that dates back to the 13th century, with the current structure primarily reflecting Edwardian-era modifications. A visit to the manor provides insight into the life of the upper-middle-class during the Edwardian times and earlier. It has been a magnet for cultural and historical tourism since it was opened to the public in 1933 after being gifted to the city by the Stanford family.

Tourists are captivated by its period decor, fascinating collection of artifacts, and stories of resident ghosts, which has made it a popular destination for ghost tours. The attraction is also well-known for its walled gardens, which include a Pet Cemetery, highlighting the historical relationship between the residents and their pets.
