Overview

Pshart Valley, located in the Pamir Mountains near the town of Murghab in eastern Tajikistan, is a remote and stunning destination known for its high-altitude desert landscapes.

Getting to Pshart Valley

To visit Pshart Valley, you will generally have to pass through Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, and then make your way to Murghab before continuing on to the valley itself.

By Air and Road:

• Step 1: Fly into Dushanbe International Airport (DYU), which is well-connected with major cities in the region.
• Step 2: From Dushanbe, you can either hire a private car or join a guided tour to get to Murghab. The journey by road can take up to two days because of the long distance and difficult terrain.
• Step 3: After reaching Murghab, you can arrange for a local 4x4 vehicle to take you into Pshart Valley. This part of the journey will likely be off-road.

By Road (International Travelers):

• From Kyrgyzstan: If you are starting your journey from Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), travel to Osh and then cross the border into Tajikistan at the Kulma Pass (note that this border is closed in winter). From there, drive to Murghab.
• From China: You can enter Tajikistan through the Kulma Pass from the region of Tashkurgan in China, but keep in mind this option is also subject to closures in winter months.

Important Considerations

Travel to Pshart Valley requires preparation:

• Permits: A GBAO permit is required to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, where Murghab and Pshart Valley are located.
• Altitude: Murghab is at an altitude of around 3,600 meters (11,800 feet), and the valley is even higher. Acclimate properly to avoid altitude sickness.
• Supplies: Bring enough food, water, and warm clothing, as amenities are scarce outside of Murghab.
• Vehicle: A sturdy 4x4 vehicle is necessary due to the rough, unpaved roads.
• Guides: Hiring a local guide can greatly enhance your experience and provide invaluable assistance with navigation and lodging.
