How To Reach San Giorgio Maggiore (Venice) In 2026

Reaching San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, Italy

San Giorgio Maggiore is an island located directly opposite St. Mark's Square in Venice, Italy. Visiting this picturesque island involves a scenic journey across the Venetian Lagoon. Here's a detailed guide on different ways to reach San Giorgio Maggiore:

Vaporetto (Water Bus)

Line 2: To reach San Giorgio Maggiore, you can take the Vaporetto line 2, which stops directly at the island. This line runs between San Zaccaria (near St. Mark’s Square) and San Giorgio Maggiore Church, providing easy access for tourists visiting the main attractions of Venice. Be sure to check the latest timetable and seasonal schedules as they can change throughout the year.

Private Water Taxi

For a more direct and private mode of transportation, consider hiring a water taxi. Although more expensive, water taxis offer a faster and more personal way to travel in Venice. They can pick you up from your location and take you straight to the San Giorgio Maggiore dock.

Gondola Traghetto

Travel to San Giorgio Maggiore can also be experienced by taking a gondola traghetto, which is a larger gondola operated by two oarsmen. These are used primarily for crossing the Grand Canal at specific points but may also be arranged for special trips to nearby islands like San Giorgio Maggiore.

On Foot

Since Venice is a pedestrian city with countless bridges and walkways, you cannot reach San Giorgio Maggiore by foot alone. However, walking is a significant part of the journey. Be prepared to walk to a nearby Vaporetto station or water taxi pickup point.

By Car

Venice is a car-free city, and there is no bridge that connects the mainland to San Giorgio Maggiore. If you're traveling by car, you must park at one of the parking garages on the mainland, such as Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, and then proceed with one of the water-based transportation options.

From Marco Polo Airport

If you're arriving at Venice's Marco Polo Airport, the best way to reach the Vaporetto services or water taxis is first to take a bus or a shuttle to Piazzale Roma, and from there, get on a Vaporetto line that will take you to San Giorgio Maggiore.

Note that while visiting the island, you can also enjoy San Giorgio Maggiore Church and the adjacent Benedictine monastery, known for their architecture and art, including paintings by Tintoretto. Additionally, the bell tower provides a magnificent view of Venice.
