Food History of Seopjikoji, Jeju, South Korea

Seopjikoji, located on the eastern shore of Jeju Island, is an area rich with marine resources and a strong local food culture. Jeju has a unique food heritage, being an island that has historically relied on both the sea and its fertile volcanic soil for sustenance. The traditional cuisine of Jeju is distinct from mainland Korea, with an array of seafood, and legume-based dishes.

Fishing is a major part of life in Seopjikoji, and thus seafood features heavily in their cuisine. The harsh wind and cooler climate contribute to a unique set of ingredients used in local dishes. Jeju is also famous for its Hallabong (a type of mandarin), Jeju black pork (though not pertaining to this request), and other local products like green tea and Jeju tangerines, ensuring a variety of food options for visitors.
