Silver Pagoda Tourism History

Welcome to the Silver Pagoda, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

History of the Silver Pagoda

The Silver Pagoda, also known as Wat Preah Keo or Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is located within the grounds of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. The temple gets its name from the more than 5,000 silver tiles that cover its floor, each weighing approximately 1.125 kilograms. It was originally constructed in 1892 during the reign of King Norodom, though much of the current structure is a result of a rebuild in 1962.

Historically, the Silver Pagoda has been a place of worship and a repository for cultural treasures. The temple is known for its Buddha statues, particularly the life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha adorned with 9,584 diamonds. The temple complex has survived many tumultuous periods in Cambodian history, including the Khmer Rouge regime, where it remained largely intact while most other religious structures were desecrated.

Tourism History

As part of the Royal Palace compound, the Silver Pagoda has been a significant tourist attraction since Cambodia opened its doors to tourism in the late 20th century. With the end of the Cambodian Civil War and the stabilization under the Cambodian People’s Party, tourism began to flourish in the 1990s. Visitors have been drawn to the intricate artwork, the historical Buddha images, and the peaceful presence of the Pagoda and Royal Palace grounds.

The Latest Tourism Trends

In recent years, Phnom Penh's tourism has trended toward immersive cultural experiences. Tourists are seeking to understand more about the nation’s history, including its architecture, religion, and the tragic events of the Khmer Rouge era.
