Traveling to Sittwe, Myanmar (Burma)

Sittwe is the capital of the Rakhine State in the western part of Myanmar. Getting there can be an exciting journey as it is not as straightforward as reaching other more popular destinations.

By Air

One of the most convenient modes of transportation to reach Sittwe is by air. Sittwe Airport (IATA: AKY) is serviced by domestic flights from various cities in Myanmar. Major domestic airlines such as Myanmar National Airlines, Air KBZ, and Mann Yadanarpon Airlines offer flights from Yangon, the largest city and major international gateway to Myanmar. Direct flights typically take around 1.5 hours.

For those looking for a more adventurous route, long-distance buses from Yangon and other cities are available. The journey from Yangon to Sittwe by bus can be quite lengthy, often taking over 24 hours, and it includes a mix of road conditions. Long-distance buses usually arrive at the Sittwe Central Bus Station, located a few kilometers from the city center.

By Boat

One unique way to see the region is by taking a boat from Mrauk U – an ancient archaeological town and one of Myanmar's up-and-coming tourist sites. The boat trip down the Kaladan River to Sittwe offers scenic views and a peek into local river life. However, this method is more time-consuming and subject to weather conditions and seasonal variations.
