Getting to Merv, Turkmenistan

By Air: The nearest airport to Merv is in the city of Mary, which has the Mary International Airport (MYP). Regular flights connect Mary to Turkmenistan's capital, Ashgabat, and from there, international connections can be made.

By Road: From Mary city center, you can either hire a taxi or take a local tour to reach the ancient site of Merv, which is approximately 30 kilometers to the east.

By Public Transport: Local buses also ply between Mary and Merv, but please note that schedules can be infrequent and may require some flexibility in your travel plans.

When you arrive at the historical park, you can explore the site which is spread out over a large area. Small and Great Kyz Kala are two of the most prominent structures.

Small Kyz Kala: Said to be a fortified palace, it dates back to the 7th or 8th century. Its name translates to 'Maiden's Castle' in Turkmen, and it features unique corrugated walls.

Great Kyz Kala: Similar in design to the Small Kyz Kala, this larger structure originally had two floors and stands out for its distinctive, wave-like patterns on the walls.

Guided Tours: Consider hiring a guide at the site to get detailed historical context and to find the best routes to explore both Kyz Kalas, as well as other monuments within Merv such as the Mausoleums of Sultan Sanjar and Muhammad ibn Zayd.
