Summer Palace Tourism

Type of destination: Cultural heritage site
Ideal visit duration: 3-4 hours
The Summer Palace, located in Beijing, China, is an exquisite ensemble of gardens, lakes, and palaces. It is a pinnacle of Chinese landscape garden design, offering a pastoral escape into the realms of tranquility and harmony away from the bustling city. Stretching over an area of 2.9 square kilometers, of which about three quarters is water, the Summer Palace epitomizes the philosophy and practice of Chinese garden design, which is to create a seamless and poetic interplay between human structures and nature. The dominant feature of the site is Kunming Lake, with the Longevity Hill providing a backdrop. Several structures of significance throughout the palace grounds include the Tower of Buddhist Incense, the Long Corridor, and the Marble Boat. The garden was established, predominantly in its current form, during the Qing Dynasty and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. Its history, design, and the imperial significance make it an essential reference for the study of Chinese aesthetics and culture.
