Sunset Peak, also known as Tatakooti Peak, is a popular mountain peak located in Yusmarg, an alpine valley situated in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It offers breathtaking views, especially at sunset, hence the name.
Sunset Peak is approximately 4,746 meters (15,574 feet) above sea level. It is one of the higher peaks in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas.
Yusmarg is a serene meadow in the Western part of the Kashmir Valley, India. It is known for its lush green pastures, panoramic views, dense forests, and an array of trekking routes, including the one to Sunset Peak.
The best time to visit Sunset Peak is from May to September when the weather is pleasant, and the meadows are in full bloom. The monsoon months from July to August might be less ideal due to possible heavy rains.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as trekking, camping, horse riding, and nature walks. Photography enthusiasts will find the landscape around Sunset Peak particularly enchanting.
Yusmarg is home to diverse wildlife, including species like Himalayan birds, leopards, and Himalayan black bears. However, wildlife spotting should be done with caution and ideally with the help of local guides.
While experienced trekkers might feel comfortable trekking without a guide, it is advisable for most visitors to hire a local guide for safety reasons and to better enjoy the local insights and stories.
Accommodation options range from government-run tourist bungalows and guesthouses to private hotels and resorts. For a more adventurous experience, visitors can also opt for camping in the meadows.
It is essential to carry warm clothing, a good-quality backpack, water bottles, snacks, a first-aid kit, a map, compass or GPS device, a flashlight or headlamp, and personal identification. Also, make sure to wear sturdy trekking shoes.
There are usually no special permits required for Indian nationals to visit Yusmarg or trek to Sunset Peak. However, foreign tourists are advised to check current regulations as entry might be subject to changes and may require permits due to the sensitive border location.
