Tawang Monastery, located in the town of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, India, is a significant and holy site for Mahayana Buddhists. Founded by Mera Lama Lodre Gyasto in the year 1680-1681, the monastery is perched at an elevation of about 3,000 meters above sea level, offering spectacular views of the Tawang River Valley and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. It is known as the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. The three-storied building is a stunning work of traditional architecture, housing an 8-meter-high gilded statue of Lord Buddha. The monastery complex includes a library with valuable old scriptures, residential quarters for the monks, and a center for Buddhist cultural studies. The monastery's serene atmosphere and its historical significance make it a profound spiritual and cultural site for visitors.
