Type of destination: Observation wheel
Ideal visit duration: 30 minutes to 1 hour
The London Eye, commonly referred to as the Millennium Wheel, stands proudly on the South Bank of the River Thames in London, United Kingdom. Opened to the public in 2000, this giant cantilevered observation wheel has become one of the city's most popular attractions. Standing at a striking height of approximately 135 meters, it offers visitors magnificent 360-degree views of the London skyline. It features 32 sealed and air-conditioned ovoidal passenger capsules, each of which can accommodate up to 25 people. The slow rotation speed allows guests to embark and disembark without the wheel needing to stop, and one complete revolution takes about 30 minutes. The London Eye was designed by architects Frank Anatole, Nic Bailey, Steve Chilton, Malcolm Cook, Mark Sparrowhawk, and Julia Barfield & David Marks. It was initially constructed as a temporary structure, but due to its immense popularity and iconic status, it has become a permanent fixture. The wheel provides a unique perspective of iconic landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul's Cathedral, and on a clear day, views that extend up to 40 kilometers in all directions.
