Buckingham Palace is the London residence and administrative headquarters of the monarch of the United Kingdom. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is often at the centre of state occasions and royal hospitality. Built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham, it became the royal palace of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. With 775 rooms, including 19 State rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, the palace is a symbol of the British monarchy, architectural artistry, and the site of the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony. The palace's grandeur extends to its large and lush gardens, which are the largest private gardens in London. Visitors can tour the State Rooms, admire its extensive art collection that forms part of the Royal Collection, and witness the pageantry of royal events. The façade facing the Mall was designed by Sir Aston Webb and completed in 1913. Buckingham Palace was declared a Grade I listed building in 1970 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
