Wat Ek Phnom is an ancient and partially ruined temple situated 11 kilometers north of the city of Battambang in Cambodia. This temple predates the well-known Angkor Wat and is thought to have been constructed during the 11th century under the rule of King Suryavarman I. The temple is a Hindu site dedicated to the god Shiva, and it features a large Buddha statue that is a significant draw for visitors and locals alike. The architecture of Wat Ek Phnom is indicative of the Angkorian era with elements such as the sandstone carvings, lintels, and sculptures showcasing intricate Khmer artistry. Although less preserved than other temples in Cambodia, it offers a less crowded and more serene atmosphere, allowing visitors to explore the ruins and surrounding area at a leisurely pace. Aside from its historical significance, the site is enveloped by lush vegetation, giving it a picturesque setting that is particularly striking during the green season.
