Wat Phou is an ancient Khmer temple complex located in southern Laos. Here's how to reach this UNESCO World Heritage site:
Pakse International Airport (PKZ) is the nearest airport to Wat Phou. Regular flights connect Pakse with Laos' capital Vientiane and other regional destinations. Upon arriving at Pakse Airport, you can hire a taxi or tuk-tuk, or arrange for a hotel transfer to reach Wat Phou.
Wat Phou is located about 40 kilometers from the town of Pakse. You can hire a motorbike, car, or join a guided tour from Pakse to reach the temple complex. The journey usually takes around 1 hour by car.
Local buses and shared songthaews (converted trucks with bench seating in the back) also run from Pakse's Southern Bus Terminal to Champasak town, which is close to Wat Phou. From Champasak, you can take a short tuk-tuk ride to the temple.
Alternatively, you can enjoy a scenic route taking a boat along the Mekong River from Pakse to Champasak. Once in Champasak, Wat Phou is just a short tuk-tuk ride away.
Staying in Champasak is recommended if you wish to explore Wat Phou without rushing. There are a range of accommodation options available, from guesthouses to luxury resorts.
