The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, is a significant religious site located in the Old City of Jerusalem. Visitors can reach this historic site by various means of transportation.

Arriving by Air

Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv is the main international gateway to Israel. From the airport, travelers have several options to reach Jerusalem:

  • Taxi Service: Direct taxi service is available from the airport to Jerusalem. The ride takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic.
  • Shared Taxi (sherut): Shared taxis can be a cost-effective option, dropping passengers at various locations in Jerusalem.
  • Bus: The airport offers a direct bus line to Jerusalem's central bus station. From there, the light rail or a local bus can be taken to the Old City.
  • Train: Recently, a high-speed train line has been inaugurated that connects the airport with the Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon Station in around 20 minutes. From the train station, you can take a bus, tram, or taxi to the Old City.

Getting Around in Jerusalem

  • Light Rail: Jerusalem's light rail system has a stop close to the Old City called "City Hall" (ירושלים עירייה). From there, it is a short walk to Jaffa Gate, and another walk to the Western Wall.
  • Bus: Many city buses serve the Old City with stops near Jaffa Gate or the Western Wall.
  • Walking: Jerusalem is a walkable city, especially the Old City, which is a pedestrian zone. It's possible to explore the area on foot, and it's a great way to experience the local atmosphere.
  • Car: While driving your own car is an option, parking near the Old City can be challenging, and it's recommended to use one of the several parking lots outside the Old City walls and then walk or take a shuttle to the Western Wall.

Remember that the Old City of Jerusalem has several gates. The closest gate to the Western Wall is the Dung Gate, although the Jaffa Gate and the Zion Gate are also within walking distance.
