Gulmarg, a picturesque town nestled in the Himalayas, is known for its breathtaking beauty and world-class ski resorts. But have you ever wondered what it would be like to not just visit Gulmarg, but to actually live there for a year? To become a local and immerse yourself in the rich culture and natural wonders of this stunning destination? Well, I did just that, and in this blog post, I will share my incredible experience of living in Gulmarg for a year.
As I stepped off the plane and took in the crisp mountain air, I knew I was in for an unforgettable adventure. I had always dreamt of living in a small mountain community, and Gulmarg seemed like the perfect place to make that dream a reality. The town welcomed me with open arms, and I soon found myself becoming a part of the close-knit local community.
One of the greatest perks of living in Gulmarg is being surrounded by nature's wonders. Every day, I woke up to the majestic sight of snow-capped mountains and lush green meadows. I spent my mornings hiking through breathtaking trails, discovering hidden waterfalls, and immersing myself in the serene beauty of the Himalayas.
During the winter months, Gulmarg transforms into a winter wonderland, and skiing becomes the main attraction. As a local, I had the opportunity to hit the slopes whenever I pleased, taking advantage of the world-class ski resorts right on my doorstep. It was a thrill like no other, speeding down the powdery slopes and feeling the cold wind on my face.
Living in Gulmarg allowed me to truly immerse myself in the local Kashmiri culture. I had the privilege of getting to know the warm and hospitable people of the town who welcomed me into their homes and shared their traditions with me. From learning how to cook traditional Kashmiri dishes to participating in cultural festivals, I felt like a part of the community.
One of the highlights of my year in Gulmarg was celebrating festivals like Eid and Lohri with the locals. I witnessed their vibrant customs, tasted delicious traditional food, and danced to the lively beats of traditional music. It was an experience that brought me closer to the heart and soul of Kashmir.
Living in Gulmarg for a year was surprisingly affordable. Renting a small house or apartment in the town cost around ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 per month, depending on the location and amenities. Groceries and daily essentials were reasonably priced, and eating out at local restaurants was also quite affordable, with a meal for two costing around ₹500 to ₹800.
Outdoor activities such as skiing and hiking did incur additional costs, but they were well worth it for the incredible experiences they offered. Ski passes ranged from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 per day, and equipment rentals were available at reasonable rates.
Living in Gulmarg, like any other place, had its downsides. The town can experience harsh winters with heavy snowfall, which sometimes led to power outages and limited access to certain amenities. Additionally, as Gulmarg is a small town, the availability of some products and services might be limited.
However, these minor inconveniences were overshadowed by the overall experience of living in such a unique and beautiful place. The incredible natural beauty, welcoming community, and opportunity for adventure made up for any challenges that came my way.
Living in Gulmarg for a year was a life-changing experience for me. I not only got to enjoy the stunning natural beauty and thrilling adventures but also became a part of the warm and vibrant local community. My time in Gulmarg taught me to slow down, appreciate the simple pleasures of life, and embrace the richness of different cultures.
If you have ever dreamed of living in a mountain paradise, I highly recommend considering Gulmarg. It offers a unique blend of natural wonders, outdoor activities, and a welcoming community that will make you feel right at home. So pack your bags, immerse yourself in the charm of Gulmarg, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
