Alchi Choskor is an ancient Buddhist monastic complex situated in the Alchi village in the Leh District of the Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Positioned on the bank of the Indus River, Alchi is renowned for being home to some of the oldest and most magnificent Buddhist wall paintings and sculptures. Dated back to the 10th century, Alchi Monastery differentiates itself from other Ladakhi monasteries by being located on flat ground rather than on a hilltop. Its artistic and spiritual heritage is attributed to the great translator Rinchen Zangpo who commissioned the artwork that blends Indian and Kashmiri styles. The complex consists of several temples, with the most prominent ones being the Dukhang (Assembly Hall) and the three-storied Sumtsek. These temples house an extensive collection of ancient murals and wooden sculptures. Alchi Choskor is often considered a hidden gem emphasizing Mahayana Buddhism and is a crucial site for scholars and spirituality seekers.
